Florida Trip and Hurricane Irma
Hi all! Me and my wife are travelling from the UK to the US on Thursday the 7th September. We're flying in to New York and spending a few days there before flying down to Miami on the 10th and picking up a car and driving to Key Largo.
Our current concern is the impending threat of hurricane Irma.
We're spending about three weeks in the US in total, so we're not particularly inclined to start cancelling anything yet but we are thinking that we need to come up with a contingency plan for the worst case scenario (which at the moment, the forecasts are making look increasingly likely). I was hoping for some advice from anyone who might have some more knowledge than I do.
If the forecast is for the storm to be right where we are heading on the day we travel South, is there any point travelling down then? Is it likely to be better off delaying that leg of the journey and going somewhere else/staying put for a few days?
Our plan was to go scuba diving for a few days in Key Largo, how long roughly speaking would it take for sea conditions to calm back down after a hurricane has passed over the area? Is it pretty soon after the storm or do conditions remain pretty rough for a while afterwards?
The final leg of our trip was to drive back up to the Orlando area on the 14th and do the theme parks, etc. In the worst-case scenario, is everything in Florida pretty much built to withstand a hurricane? Should everything (for the most part at least) re-open once the worst of the storm has passed? Most of the forecasts have the storm well North of Orlando by that point in time.
We're looking at the forecasts constantly and it's frustrating that we don't know for absolute certain but that's the nature of weather I suppose! Any help/advice on what we could do to make sure the trip isn't a disaster would be much appreciated!
