23/F first time solo traveler heading to the UK for a week in October - itinerary help

Hi solo travelers! I'm a 23 year old single girl based in NYC. I've been wanting to go to the UK for a long time but I haven't done any traveling without my family, so I was reluctant. But this week I finally bit the bullet and booked a solo trip to the UK on October 14th-23rd. I fly into London on the night of the 14th and leave from Edinburgh on the morning of the 23rd so I know my start and end points, but I'm not sure how to fill in the trip! Here's my itinerary so far:

10/14-10/18: Staying in London

10/18-10/22: Staying in Edinburgh

Aaaaand that's it. I definitely want to go to a few of the lectures on the 19th at the Edinburgh Festival of Politics and I plan to visit Oxford or Cambridge, but beyond that my itinerary is completely open.

I'm planning on staying in a hotel or Airbnb for my first 2 nights, since I don't get in until late at night on the 14th and I want a day to recover from jet lag. I booked beds in Astor Museum Hostel in London for the 16th and 17th and Castle Rock Hostel in Edinburgh for the 18th and 19th. I've got a friend based in Newcastle who's planning to visit on the 20th-22nd so we're splitting an Airbnb or a hotel room in Edinburgh for the last weekend. I'd love some feedback on my hostel choices - I'm looking for hostels that are fun and social but comfortable and safe enough to get a decent night's sleep in. I'm also only staying in all-female rooms - would that get in the way of me making friends or does most of the socializing happen in common spaces?

I have no idea what to put on my itinerary, so I could use your help on that too! I don't know anything about London or Edinburgh so I'd love to hear about particularly fun neighborhoods and attractions. Here are some day trips I'm interested in:

  • Bath

  • Glasgow

  • Oxford or Cambridge

  • Stirling Castle and Loch Lomond

  • Scottish Highlands (may be too ambitious)

  • Lake District (almost certainly too ambitious)

I'm probably missing some good ones, but I'd like to narrow it down to 2 or 3 full-day excursions. Are there any must-see easy day trips from London or Edinburgh for a girl who loves history, museums, hiking, nature, and drinking with friendly strangers? I've found it pretty easy to befriend strangers in NYC and on family vacations but the friendlier the locals the better!
