Road trip suggestions for Cascade-Sierra Nevada Range (California to Washington)
I'm planning a ~2 week road trip for next year. I'd like to wend my way up through the Sierra Nevada Range in California and into the Cascades. We are two adults and two young children, so both hotels and camping are options.
I've crossed these ranges a number of times from east to west, but I've always wondered about the best way to see them from south to north. This might require a bit of zig-zagging, but we just love being in the mountains and it would be a wonderful cross section of the country to explore.
Any suggestions for scenic sections I should include? Any interesting towns to add to our itinerary? We're doing our preliminary research this week and would be very interested in input.
(background: I grew up in Los Angeles, lived in both Portland and Seattle, but aside from short trips to Yosemite, Tahoe, and Snoqualmie, we've stuck close to the interstate.)
- The California itineraries I see usually send you straight up the Owens Valley, making detours up into the mountains for side trips. Is there a better way?
