6 Months in Italy for business - 1st time solotravel
Hi everyone! I've just been granted a work visa to spend the next 6 months in Italy and I couldn't be more excited!! I'm a 24 yr old male from the United States and I'll be spending the majority of my time in Milan. I've never been there before and can't wait to get started and to explore my new home.
While I'm really looking forward to my time in Milan, i know this a dream opportunity to incorporate some amazing weekend trips all over Europe. I've never traveled by myself before so I am a bit nervous about that - however i want to push myself to really get out there and explore. I want to do my best to be budget conscious, but if there is something that you think is definitely worth the extra $$$ please let me know!
The main reasons I'm writing this is are:
1). I want to be sure to get a full experience in Milan (suggestions for their are certainly welcome!) but at the same time I i want to try for 1-2 weekends of travel per month. What are some of your favorite weekend trips (late friday - sunday)? Or your MUST SEE spots
2) I haven't done many of the major "tourist" destinations that everyone keeps telling me I "have to go see", but based on much of my reading and research it seems many of you suggest forgoing those sites in favor of the more authentic experiences, more off the beaten path (which is my inclination as well). So which should I focus on???? And finally,
3). As I mentioned I've never traveled by myself before, so I'm going to have to learn fast. What do you see as common attributes of the solo travelers who seem to be the best at it?
Milan being a fairly central location it seems like there are loads of trains available and skyscanner has a lots of great options for cheap flights. Right now my the top 3 countries I'm looking at weekend trips (outside of Italy) are Germany, Switzerland, and Spain but I'm open to any and all suggestions.
