Picking a Honduras destination
I've been working my through Latin America one country at a time, and I am looking into spending 5-7 days in Honduras sometime during the fall. Normally I like to focus on major cities, since they fit my main travel interests (local food and drink, nightlife, museums, urban design, etc), but given the notorious reputation of cities like Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, I am looking at other destination ideas for the country.
I am not interested in hiking, camping, boating, snorkeling/diving, or any outdoorsy activities. Roatan, the usual go-to, is out, because it's so centered around the diving scene. Beyond that, I've narrowed it down to the four places below and wanted to see if anyone here had any experience that would help me decide on a place. I speak Spanish, so language barrier won't be an factor in the decision. Logistics-wise, I would be flying into San Pedro Sula and going from there, so everything is in that vicinity.
-
Utila: Beautiful beaches, safe, and from my understanding, a younger crowd and more nightlife. But is it worth the trouble to fly there if I'm not diving or snorkeling?
-
La Ceiba: Looks like it would fit my desire to stay in a city, but does it have the security issues of other major Honduran cities?
-
Tela - Heard good things about the town, and it would be interesting to get a glimpse into the Garifuna culture there.
-
Copan Ruinas: Looks like it could be a mini Antigua (which I did enjoy visiting for 5 days last year), but I've visited Mayan ruins before, so it's more a matter of whether there's enough to do in the town without getting bored.
Right now, I'm feeling like a La Ceiba + Tela trip would be the front runner, but I'm also open to other ideas. Thanks in advance.
