Need help selecting my next destination!
Hi all,
Sorry if this is considered a "low-effort post" but I figured I would try anyways. My girlfriend and I are looking to spend somewhere somewhere between 7-10 days between one or two cities (or more?), in the U.S. or Canada.
I will be flying on points, so my only restriction will be that HI and AK are not allowed. We plan on renting a car, so transit accessibility and getting between places doesn't matter much.
We have put together a short list of destinations, but are having trouble selecting our final one. Here is the list, along with the reasons we wish to go.
PS: If timing works out, I will be proposing to my girlfriend on this trip. Bonus points for romantic destinations!
- NYC (and greater NYC area): we havent been since 2014 and there is always more to see
- L.A. and San Diego: we did L.A. and San Fran in 2015 and loved it. We want to go back to spend more time on L.A. county beaches and to check out S.D. while there.
- Charleston and Savannah: this is high on both of our lists. We both like city/culture+history/beaches, but I am concerned that they wont be quite as exciting as the city/culture+history/beaches of Southern California for example. Maybe throw Jacksonville in too?
- Miami and the Keys: I love driving, (hence the L.A. to San Fran trip along the PCH) and would love to do the Overseas Highway. This also has the city/culture/beaches synergy that I desire.
- Nashville: we both love country music. Need we say more?
- Utah and Arizona area: this is higher on my girlfriends list, and lower on mine. I hate the desert due to the ceaseless heat. It would be cool to see Zion and Grand Canyon though. *Seattle and Portland: we love the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, have both been to Vancouver a couple of times, and feel the need to visit the crown jewels of America's Pacific Northwest
- Newfoundland: this one is super high on my list and rising on hers. I want to go primarily because were Canadians, and the natural beauty of the place is supposedly unparalleled (hello Gros Morne National Park?)
I hope that this post wasnt too much or too little information, but we appreciate any input nonetheless! Thanks everybody!
Some edits based on questions asked:
- We want to avoid physical activity (rather, not go somewhere based solely on physical activity), and like cities with culture/history and a nearby beach ideally!
- NYC and Cali were listed despite having us visit in the past because we loved the trips so much and there is still more to do and see in each place.
- I have gone back and removed some cities to make the list more manageable. They were: Chicago, NOLA, and D.C.
- Our budget is likely somewhere in the vicinity of $5,000 USD.
- We are flexible on timing. For example, if it were NYC, we would likely go late spring/early summer. If it were California, we would go late fall/early winter.
