Is dishonesty basically rife in India?
I've been reading about what scams to look out for in India lately and the sheer scale of scams that exist there is staggering, it sounds worse than most other poor countries.
They seem to have the full scale of scams there, everything from petty short changing to outright theft and it seems that a Western tourist is likely to encounter all of it on a daily basis.
One thing that surprised me particularly is that many train stations have multiple fake ticket offices set up solely for the purpose of stealing money from Westerners, and these scams seem to operate with the full collusion of the railway authorities and the police.
In how many other countries do you come across dishonesty and theft that blatant?
It seems that India is a country where you have to be completely aware at all times because frankly most people you interact with will attempt to scam you if they can get away with it, if you drop your guard it seems you are likely to get scammed, possibly significantly.
Based on what I've read I get the impression that the reason the situation with scams is so bad in India is because a lot of Indians have the mentality that it's perfectly morally acceptable to steal from Westerners, and as a result scams aimed at Westerners operate quite blatantly with little to no interference from the authorities because the country in generally sees scamming Westerners as no big deal.
