In defense of whirlwind travel ("If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium").
Whirlwind travel is much maligned. I am occasionally guilty of it.
But, you know what?
I have delightful memories from places I visited in just a few hours, memories that I would not have had if I had limited myself to "proper length" visits.
Ljubljana (overnight): what a magical place! Prague without the tourists.
Kotor, Montenegro (4 hour round trip from Dubrovnik): Dubrovnik without the tourists.
Sintra, Portugal (short train trip from Lisbon): the cozy castle built by an 18 year old prince, abandoned, now open, and still exactly as he left it.
Shannon, Ireland (3 hour layover): got in a taxi, fell in love with Ireland.
Narita, Japan (overnight layover on my way to Hong Kong): never mind the airport: Narita has a bit of the best that Japan has to offer.
Salzburg, Austria (one afternoon, round trip from Munich): just precious! I wept (seriously) when I got off the train and saw the Mirabel gardens.
To those of you who live in such wonderful places: I am sorry that I didn't do your home justice. But I am very glad nonetheless for having had a delicious taste of your home. Thank you!
