Background: Hey guys! I'll be travelling out of my native US for the first time ever as a lucid adult and I would appreciate some pointers for my trip. 23F with a 26M friend who has lived in Taiwan for 3 years and will be my translator/travel buddy/scooter. Budget is $1000~ USD

Actual itinerary:

9/21 Thurs: fly
Friday Acclimate and stay in Taipei, easy going suggestions welcome here. Thinking of doing something cultural or artsy. Taiwan Expo Park/Huashan 1914 Creative Park/MOCA/Fine Arts Museum currently on my mind.
Saturday Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, Taipei 101, Elephant Mountain, Tonghua Night Market. More suggestions around this area are welcome, unless you think I'm overloading myself!
Sunday Qing Tian Gang Parking, Beitou Hotsprings. More suggestions welcome around this general area?
Monday Bus to Hualien, Taroko Gorge exploring. Suggest me your (easier) hiking trails? And places to see/eat in Hualien. Currently thinking of: Songyuan Villa, Qixingtang Beach, Hualien Night Market.
Tuesday Hualien/Taroko Gorge some more. Possibly drive to Jiufen this day instead.
Wends Drive up to Houtong Village/Jiufen/Shifen and then back to Taipei.
9/28 Thurs fly

Main questions:

  • Any tips on how to survive my first 17hr flight?
  • Will getting an international license be a bad idea (safety wise) to drive up on the coast from Hualien to Houtong/Jiufen/Shifen and then Taipei? I slightly optimistic of my LA driving experience to get me through this.
  • Food me! I want to eat my way through Taiwan. I have a list of night market items I already want to try but if you happen to have specific restaurants (besides addiction aquatic, that's on my to do) in any of the locations I travel to, please suggest. I also love boba/bubble tea so please suggest those too.
  • Am I overloading myself with all these plans? I'm especially worried about fitting driving up the coast + Houtong/Jiufen/Shifen in one day.
