California road trip, a non-American in need of recommendations.
Hi, non-American here with a keen interest in US geography and nature.
Next year, in June, we're planning a roughly two-week family road trip through California: my wife, my two teenage sons, and myself. We're particularly interested in nature: the ocean, mountains, forests, national parks, etc. This would be our first time on the Western Coast. A few years ago we visited Florida, and the year before NYC and part of the Eastern Coast.
We enjoy long-distance driving (we'll rent a car at the airport) and we don't mind narrow windy mountain roads. On contrary.
We land in LAX, and the first few days we think of staying close to the sea (Santa Monica?) to recover from the jet lag. From there - north towards SF.
So:
- 3 nights in Santa Monica to recover from the jet lag and to explore the LA area. Is Santa Monica okay for that purpose?
- 2 nights in Monterey
- 2 nights in San Francisco
- 5 nights somewhere around Lake Tahoe (seems like a perfect place for us to wind down)
- 2 nights in Yosemite
- 1 night in Sequoia (this is mandatory, my sons insist on seeing giant trees!)
- 1 night in San Diego because of the aircraft carrier. We don't get to see that in Europe 🙂
Please rate my proposed itinerary. Are we missing something important? Are we wasting time somewhere?
We're not sure what to see along the Sequoia - San Diego leg of the trip. Should we spend a night somewhere along the way? Any proposals?
Thank you for your time. Any suggestion would be highly appreciated!
