Driving from Toronto to Edmonton in early November and wondering about the best way to break up the drive?

I know Sault Ste Marie > Thunderbay > Winnipeg are usual stopping points but I’m wondering:

1) How long is that last day from Winnipeg to Edmonton? Would it be better to break it up?

2) Daylight is short and I’d like to build in some time for picnics or maybe a hike especially in Northern ON. Recommendations on where to stop and whether there is a better way to divide the trip that would give me time for that?
