Route 66 road trip planned for May
I’ve been into road trips for over 20 years now and lately have been trying to take at least one big trip every year. (While I was in the middle of a big trip when Covid hit in 2020 (that was an experience!) I got to scratch my itch in 2021 with a bunch of day trips; I also scratched my itch by planning my next trips (and have ones planned at least once a year through 2025 now).
One of the things that I realized was that I call myself a road tripper but I’ve never driven Route 66. A post by u/Enosis21 last year where they drove the Mother Road in 6 days inspired me to try the same - since I live in Winnipeg and therefore it would take me two days just to get to the start of 66 in Chicago I wanted to do the trip quick yet still take in the entire 66 experience so u/Enosis21’s blog was an inspiration and helped (with a few other websites) to plan what to see.
Now the big question that I have, what I’d like to do is drive on as much of the actual Route 66 as possible and avoid interstates to get the genuine experience. My concern though is while I’ve determined on Google Maps what roads to take, how would I get these in my GPS (just my iPhone’s Google Maps app is what I use)? I suspect that if I let it direct me that it’ll take me on the Interstate instead, and even when I ask it to avoid interstates it won’t take me on the specific streets I’ve determined are most likely 66 without a lot of fuss. I love the idea of paper maps but my wife isn’t a great navigator even with gps so I don’t think she’d be great with paper maps either. (Also where would I get paper maps showing the Route 66 route as best as possible?)
I’d appreciate any advice, this is definitely my most planned trip to date. Planning this for end of May as my wife has a milestone birthday that month and it’s a gift to her, the nostalgia for the Route 66 era, a lot of the places I plan to see tie in with her interests. Also want to do it in a quick time period like u/Enosis21 because of the two days it takes just to get to 66 (and two days back) and don’t want to take a massive amount of time off work, especially when I’m planning another two week road trip in the summer or fall of the same year.
Thanks in advance!
