Cross-Country: Upcoming 7-9 day one-way road trip FL-> SoCal
In late September, we will be moving from central FL to Southern CA. Since I have a big dog, we are turning the move out there into a road trip. For this amount of distance, I know a little over a week is probably not enough time to make “the most” of it, but we are going to do our best given our constraints. We plan to rent a crossover type vehicle for the trek and stay in hotels/Airbnb’s. I am looking for advice on:
-
General tips / tricks for someone who has never taken a road trip more than 8-9 hours. Are there things you wish you’d known before your first one? Are there planning tools you’d recommend?
-
I have not been to many states on our route, only TX (Austin). Looking at online “stop” calculators, there are some points I think it would be good to modify (particularly Juarez, Mexico and trading Tallahassee/Baton Rouge for NOLA). Any other potential revisions you’d make to the stops suggested below? We’d also love to work in the Grand Canyon since we have never seen it, but not sure how to best work that in.
- Start from Orlando, Florida 4 hours to Tallahassee, Florida after driving about 260 miles / 410 km
- 7 hours to Baton Rouge, Louisiana after driving about 440 miles / 710 km
- 4.5 hours to Houston, Texas after driving about 270 miles / 430 km
- 3 hours to San Antonio, Texas after driving about 200 miles / 320 km
- 8 hours to Juarez, Mexico after driving about 550 miles / 890 km
- 5 hours to Tucson, Arizona after driving about 320 miles / 510 km
- 7 hours to Orange County, California after driving about 470 miles / 760 km
Thanks for any and all input!
