West Texas to Southwestern Georgia on I-20: advice?
Howdy friendly r/roadtrip folks!
I'm fully vaccinated, and will be driving from West Texas to southwestern Georgia on May 30th and 31st. On this drive, I don't have a ton of time for side trips, and I'm planning on sticking to I-20 for most of the way. However, I'll be driving back along the same route at the end of the summer, and will have some more time to stop and see some sights, so recs now will help my future self! As someone who's never been east of Dallas in the South before, what would be worth stopping at along the way?
I've been looking at Atlas Obscura and trawling and Google Maps, but I figured it'd be worth a shot to post here too. I'm interested in good coffee, historical sites, natural sites, kitschy tourist things, etc. that are on/pretty close to I-20. Currently, my only plans along the way are stopping at Buc-ees in east Texas, spending the night in Vicksburg, Mississippi, driving the Selma to Montgomery scenic byway, and seeing the Jimmy Carter peanut statue in Plains, Georgia.
I'm also curious if anyone has general recommendations for driving alone in the South/on I-20 as a young white woman. I've done a fair amount of driving in the West, Midwest, and Northeast, but never in the South. Any advice about what drivers are like, good places to stop for gas/food/coffee, potential hazards or bad road conditions to watch out for, or places to avoid? I know it's also Memorial Weekend, so should I be on high alert for cops and drunk drivers?
Thanks y'all!
