Looking for suggestions from Laredo, TX to Chicago
My wife and I are US expats, originally from California and now living in Mexico. The import permit on our van is expiring so we need to take it out of Mexico. We are planning to drive back to the US, cross the border near Laredo, TX and then we would have 10 days to make our way to Chicago where we will sell the van and then fly back to our home in Mexico.
A little bit about ourselves - we are in our mid 50's, we like museums, some light hiking, sightseeing, and urban exploring. We plan on staying in Airbnb and mid range hotel/motels along the way
We are roughly thinking of this itinerary after crossing the border in Texas:
San Antonio x 2 nights then detour through Texas Hill Country (via Kerrville, Johnson City, etc) on way to Austin
Austin x 1-2 nights (we’ve been to Austin before)
Oklahoma City x 1 night - follow old Route 66 for remainder of drive
St Louis x 2 nights
Springfield, IL x 1 night
Chicago
This leaves us with an extra 2-3 days – is there anywhere else in the vicinity we should visit or spend time? Is there a nice route off of the interstate between Austin and Oklahoma City we should take and anywhere to stop for a night along the way?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and I’ll be posting on some of the local forums for more info
