What to see/hike in between Ohio and South Dakota? Best states in between for backroads?
Planning a road trip late may for anywhere from 5-8 weeks....
I am from the Philadelphia area and have not left the tristate area.
My route so far is Philadelphia-->hockinghills, OH-->Near St.louis-->Badlands, SD-->Yellowstone,WY, grand teton-->zion,UT-->byrce canyon, Ut-->Grand canyon, AZ--> somewhere in NM maybe-->3-4 weeks in colorado. Thanks in advance.
Mostly going to hike and camp 70% of the time but I also want to stop and see other things.
I like architecture, history, museums, FOOD, quirky stuff , experiences, a sweet air bnb here and there, extreme sports, you name it....there is not much I am not interested in doing....
So I have my route planned for the most part except I am uncertain of where to go in between.
I also want to know which states to avoid and which states I should jump off the highway and cruise the back roads.
Recently someone told me to get through Ohio and Illinois quickly but take back roads in Kentucky(I do not mind going down out of my way and back up) and explore Indiana. This person also told me to avoid St. Louis at all costs because of how ghetto and confusing the road signs are. I am planning on hitting TN and KY on the way back.
