Advice needed: First solo road trip in May
Hi everyone,
I'm planning to take my first solo road trip in May and I need some advice. I've outlined below what my main objectives and questions are and hope that you all could maybe share some tips on how to have the best road trip I can given my resources and time constraints.
I will have up to a month for the road trip in a car. I want to stay frugal without sacrificing too much of the trip. These are the following stops I will be making which are set in stone and approximately in order of what seems most rational:
Leaving From: New England
- Fort Lauderdale, FL
- New Orleans, LA
- Houston, TX
- Tucson, AZ
- Grand Canyon, AZ
- Columbus, OH
Back To: New England
Here are my main interests on the trip:
- Hiking and the great outdoors
- Seeing natural wonders / sights
- Seeing national wonders / sights
- Visiting unique breweries, wineries, distilleries as COVID-19 precautions and budget allow
- Visiting unique restaurants as COVID-19 precautions and budget allow
Here are my main questions for you all:
- Based on my above route, what are some must-see stops?
- What's the best way to find lodging? I'm not opposed to tents at free campsites or couch-surfing but I want to use budget-friendly motels as much as possible. Are there any deals I should know about?
- How will COVID-19 travel restrictions impact my trip? Is this kind of trip possible given that I want to spend a lot of time outdoors (and, given the solo nature of the trip, on my own)?
- What are some tricks to save money on this whole thing?
Thank you for any advice you all may have. I'm nervous but very excited to plan this trip and am open to any and all feedback on the plans I have outlined above.
