A bit of general advice for a Brit coming to the US for a cross-country roadtrip.

Hi everyone, I'm not planning on doing this roadtrip for at least 2 or 3 years. But I'd like to get some general advice on all things roadtrip.

I'll be driving solo, either starting in Miami or New York (these are the cheapest flights usually). And I'd want to end up or at least get to visit LA.

I love the smaller towns/cities in the US. I would love to perhaps zig-zag my way across the country if it's possible. For example, if starting up in New York, kinda snake my way down to Georgia, then back up through as many states as possible to North Dakota, down to Texas then across to California, and maybe even up to Washington from there.

I already know it'll be expensive as I'd be renting a car (unless I can buy a cheap one and insure it somehow cheaper? I doubt it!) Now I'm a big guy, so me and small cars don't get along too well, so I'd immediately be looking at Saloons or even SUVs, which are obviously more expensive to hire and I imagine they swallow fuel like a mother-trucker.

I will want to be spending a day at most visiting cities & towns, then either driving on to a hotel or staying in the town overnight. Also, I'm down to go on hiking trails, scenic walks or anything thats pretty cheap or even free to do.

Questions;

How long should I give myself to complete the trip? A month? 2 months?

Will I be able to hire different vehicles without it being much more expensive? (So, a Saloon down to Georgia, an SUV up to ND, then a different car down to Texas & Cali)

What are rough fuel prices so I can budget this into my costs? (I'm aware fuel constantly changes, is there a website I can use to keep track of prices per state? Maybe even individual gas stations?)

Will all the different state laws, conditions, roads etc. be too confusing to me?

Any other general advice will be great, things I need to take into consideration etc. etc.

As I said, I'll be visiting mostly smaller cities rather than huge ones, so there probably will be less chance there's a really rough area to avoid. Although I'm aware most places will have an area like this, and I'll do my research when I have a rough idea on cities I'm visiting.

I'm aware this will cost alot of money and I'm willing to save, but I've been wanting to do a USA roadtrip for so long, I've just never looked into it much and I know reddit is great for helpful tips etc.
