Summer trip : Grand Canyon > Santa Monica > Sequoia > Yosemite > San Francisco > Lake Tahoe
Hi Everyone - my husband and I are planning a trip for his 40th birthday in July. It will be the two of us and our 10 year old. We plan to fly into Flagstaff or Phoenix and depart from Reno. We are aiming to do this Saturday-Saturday but could add a day or two if needed.
This is our tentative itinerary -
- Saturday, July 3rd - fly into Phoenix or Flagstaff, spend the night in Flagstaff, AZ
- Sunday, July 4th - Drive from Flagstaff to Grand Canyon National Park (1hr 45) – Spend day at Grand Canyon, drive halfway to Santa Monica (7hr total) and stay for the night.
- Monday, July 5th - Drive the rest of the way to Santa Monica - spend the day at the beach at stay somewhere nearby
- Tuesday, July 6th - Drive to to Sequoia National Park (3.5hrs) and explore for a bit. Drive to Yosemite National Park (3.5hrs) and spend the night in the Yosemite area.
- Wednesday, July 7th · Explore Yosemite National Park in the morning and drive to San Francisco (4hrs) in the afternoon. Spend night in SF.
- Thursday, July 8th Explore San Francisco in day and drive to Lake Tahoe in afternoon (3hr, 15mn) to spend the night.
- Friday, July 9th - Spend day at Lake Tahoe, drive to Reno (1hr) to stay the night
- Saturday, July 10th - fly out of Reno
Questions:
- Is this way too much? Am I being overly ambitious? The only day we should be in the car for more than 5 hours is Day 4 (Tuesday). Most days are around 3.5 hours. Do we need a full day of no driving? If so, where should we squeeze that in?
- We are renting a car. We plan on getting a RAV-4. Will this be okay for traveling to all of these places? Safety is obviously the concern here, not comfort.
- Anything we should cross off the list or add to it?
Thanks so much for any advice/suggestions! This is our first time doing a road trip like this and our first time in all three states, so I'm all ears.
