How to best decide whether to take a trip in own personal car or rental?
I never owned a car that I was confident in taking on a road trip. I recently got a new (to me) car that I was about to take 800 miles round trip.
I liked the flexibility of taking my own car, since I’d be able to extend my trip without the need to extend a rental.
Here the pros and cons that I see of both options:
Own car:
Cons: A lot of mileage. Depreciation. Wear and tear. Pros: Flexibility (able to extend trip easily). No rental charges. Comfort (already accustomed to the car). Ease of mind (when it comes to potential damage).
Rental:
Cons: Rental charges and fees. Inconvenient to extend rental (at the mercy of the rental company when it relates to what they’ll charge). Pros: Can add as many miles without worry. Potentially better Mpg than personal car. Potentially newer car.
For now, I think I’ll stick to using my own car if my trip is doable within 1 day. (800 miles one way). For anything further, I’ll probably do rental although the rental charges might convince me to just take my own car.
The most miles I put on a rental was around 8-10k miles within a month timespan. And I’m not sure I’d want that on my car.
What do you guys think?
