Don’t know what I don’t know. Road trip across all of the US

Bit of a noob when it comes to this stuff, but I’m planning a trip with 1 or 2 other people all the way around the US next summer. Route starts in NYC through the midwest, to Seattle, down to LA, up to Salt Lake City, down through NM and Texas to Florida, then back up the coast to DC (oversimplified but for the sake of brevity)

Couple questions: How long should this trip take? It’s around 10k miles, and we won’t spend more than an entire day in one place. What would a rough estimate of cost look like? Are there any commonly forgotten items I should bring along? As the title says, I don’t know what I don’t know, what are some other things I should be aware of?
