Pan American Road Trip from Vancouver Canada to Santiago Chile - had a few questions.
So obviously due to border restrictions, I can't do this until a bit later in the future. But as of Jan I'll have about 2 months' vacation stored up, and I have a car I really don't care about anymore. I was thinking of heading down as far as I can go, and then fly out wherever I am depending if my car fully breaks down or I run out of time. If I can make it all the way to Chile, awesome. I have a ton of questions, and am in the midst of researching & reviewing old posts. But even if you can answer 1 question, it's much appreciated!
So here's some of the questions I had:
-In terms of safety & police shakedowns, am I better off spending more time in El Salvador or Honduras?
-People that have done this before and made it to Santiago, did you scrap your car, sell it, or did you donate it to a local charity?
-As my Spanish is only about 15% complete (I can probably get to 25-30% by the time borders are open), where am I going to have the worst communication problems?
-I'm going to burn through USA, and probably get through Honduras/El Salvador quick too (I'm mainly concerned about the shakedowns in Honduras from the police). Are there any spots that you would definitely recommend I spend some extra time to soak in the culture/food/activities? Super vague question I know. But I'm more looking for misc once in a lifetime things that I should check out in non-tourist areas of countries. I've already locked down a few awesome stops in Mexico, Guatemala & Colombia.
-I'm doing the research now on the Darien gap options (shipping the car & flying, using a ferry etc.) but if anyone has the quickest and best option, give me a heads up!
