Winging it for a road trip. Could use some advice and guidance.

Hi all! My extent of road tripping is slim to none. I’ve done a 6ish hour drive, we did a 7.5 to DC and back (from providence) but that’s it.

Long of the short, I have two weeks to play with in July. I’ll never have two weeks again where I won’t have work, where I won’t have emails, etc. my wife is in classes at home and actually me and the dog hitting the road will be a benefit for her to get us out of her hair.

Details: start/end in providence RI. Crew cab Tacoma, open bed no cap/topper. Planning to kip up in the back seat, with maybe a few roach motel stops if needed for a night or two. 45lb catahoula she’ll be fine.

Question: is it smart to road trip during quarantine to one, potentially two spots hitting headlines for how bad they are for COVID right now? Answer: yes. But, again when will I ever again have two weeks to play with where I’m okay with kipping up in a truck. Once I retire I won’t be able to sleep in the cab.

Ideally I’d like to find a bed topper before the trip but not banking on it. Don’t want to tent because I don’t want to draw attention to road tripping during quarantine.

Plan is below for the cities at least. I know I won’t be able to stop and check out breweries and landmarks and museums I would otherwise, but I’d like to drive around, check out the cities, get some food to go orders and keep on trucking to the next stop. I want to see my country, it’s big and I feel like I’ve seen not nearly enough of it.

I plan to get some shower wipes and maybe as mentioned a pay by the hour level motel as needed if I need a shower one night or something. Pretty much everything will be eating take out, preferably local joints not subways around the country.

Question to some more experience folk: any advice? Am I missing having X or Y essential items? Over the 4th I’ll get the chance to kip up in the truck with the dog to test drive it and see how we do sleeping in the truck. I think it’ll be a tight fit in the cab, really hoping I can find a topper but even then it’s still only a 5ft bed. But it’s one time, if we do well and decide to make road trips a thing, I can look at setting up my truck for that. As it is, crew cab short bed Tacoma, open bed no topper.

Plan:

Day 1 providence to buffalo to Cleveland. 10ish hours driving.

Day 2 Cleveland out to Grand Rapids. This is only a 4 hour drive and will let me recover is day 1 goes not to plan. Day 1 is ambitious for sure but I think doable.

Day 3 Grand Rapids to Nashville

Day 4 Nashville to Kansas City (bbq...)

Day 5 Kansas City to Dallas TX with a stop to see friends in OK.

Day 6 Dallas to San Antonio with time in Austin. This is another short ish day to recover if time lags. Texas is sort of short days for that reason I can cut time if needed.

Day 7 San Antonio to Corpus Christi to Houston

Day 8 Houston to New Orleans

Now, day 9 and 10 are toss ups. Either NOLA to Jacksonville FL to see family for day 9, then up to Charleston on day 10 or up to Atlanta on day 9 and still Charleston on day 10. This is the only unknown right now.

Day 10 arrive in Charleston SC

Day 11 drive along the coast up SC, NC to outer banks.

Day 12 outer banks to DC

Day 13 DC to Providence via Scranton (swinging wide avoid NYC)
