PLEASE HELP! Booked a flight that connects through Vietnam, but don't have a visa, did I mess up?

I am currently in Pakse, Laos and I booked a flight to Taiwan that routes through HCMC airport in Vietnam and I have to change airlines while I am there. Before I booked the ticket I quickly looked up if I would need a visa to transit through the country and thought that the information pointed toward not needing one because I could simply check in for the next flight at the "international transfer desk" upon arrival without leaving the terminal. However, now I am doing more research and getting conflicting results. Has anyone done something like this? Did I fuck up? Is there a way around it if I did fuck up?

ps I am of USA nationality so I am pretty sure VOA is not an option for me in Vietnam
