Pros cons for cross-country stops

Hi all. I'll be moving in summer from Denver to Western Washington with a cat in tow. I'm curious on what the best path would be since I'll be going it alone and doing all the driving. I think I could do no more than 8hrs drive a day, so it looks like it will take three days stopping for two nights. Also weighing in the reality of it being the height of summer and the potential of car overheating etc, and definitely wanting to see some nice scenery if possible. The two main routes I see are:

  1. Denver to SLC (or Ogden), then pushing into some small town in eastern Oregon for night two.
  2. Denver to Billings, then Spokane for night two.

Both these routes are pretty even time-wise with the second being about 45min longer. Since I don't know the terrain or the cities I have no idea what areas are safest and what drive would be most enjoyable. It's going to be stressful with the cat but otherwise, I'm fucking stoked to see the country. The car is old but reliable, has a good coolant system and 4WD. All who know, please weigh-in. Thanks!
