Planning a USA coast to coast road trip with my family and am not sure how to go about it.
Hi all. I’m trying to plan a road trip for my family (myself, my husband, and two kids under the age of ten) for us to embark on when all this COVID stuff is over. Basically with this summer being our shelter-in-place-summer, I want next year to be our epic-adventure-summer. I got the crazy idea that we should drive to Washington DC from where we live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I’m thinking we’ll do a more southern route going there, traveling though Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, etc. and we’ll travel the more Midwest/northern states on the way back.
First, what places are a must see? The only one I have on my list is the Grand Canyon. My oldest wants to go to the UFO museum in Roswell, New Mexico. Other than that, I’d really love some more ideas. I’m open to basically anything, I just want it to be enjoyable and memorable for the kids.
Second, what sort of tips do any of you have for traveling this long and far with kids? Has anyone done this sort of thing with their family? How many hours a day should we drive? I was thinking we’d drive about 6 to 8 hours max, but some places we’ll want to spend time exploring. I don’t want the trip to take too long so that by the time we’re done we’re all sick of traveling and sightseeing, yet I want to be able to take our time and enjoy the different sights. (The longest we’ve road tripped with the kids is 12 hours, just to give you an idea of our experience.)
Thank you all!
