Going on a (nearly) cross country road trip in a few weeks. Tips for the long haul?

Hi everyone! I plan on taking some time off and clearing my head on a road trip from the northern VA area to the Grand Canyon. I do want to stop in Nashville, Amarillo, Zion National Park, Colorado Springs, and maybe another place or two.

Any tips for the long drive? I'll have a friend with me to help with the driving and the trip is dependent on whether or not the parks are open when we want to leave.

Also looking for suggestions on places to stop or see. Due to time constraints the trip can't really be for more than 12-13 days so I figured the Grand Canyon was as far west as I could go and have time to explore some other places on the way there and back.
