How to safely sleep in your car on roadtrips?
Hi all, I'm planning a roadtrip down through the Southwestern USA (Southern Colorado, Southern Utah, Northern/Middle Arizona, down to Southern California hitting all the big national parks from Denver to Los Angeles) for my girlfriend and I. I often see posts on here with people who have a bed setup in their car for 1-2 people. This would obviously be amazing as it would save tons of money on hotels (I'm a student on a budget).
My question is, how safe is it to plan to sleep in your car? For people that have done it, where do you usually park your car in the evenings to sleep? Do you search for camp sites along your route? Are there any safety measures you can take? I am assuming it is not wise to sleep in your car in and around cities/towns, but even in more of the country I am curious about the safety implications.
Would appreciate any insights, thanks!
Quick edit: I would be using a typical small SUV or something of the like, I do not have a camper van or anything.
