Solo Road Trip - From California to Kentucky
Preparing to embark on a road trip from California to Kentucky with my dog. It's not for pleasure, it is to be with my medically fragile son and my wife who is at the end of her ropes. The plan is to try to avoid as much contact as possible and drive there as quickly and safely as possible. I would love to hear from seasoned travelers on how best to do this without staying in hotels and avoiding fast food when possible.
Questions that come immediately to mind are:
- Where is it safe to sleep? I have heard conflicting stories on some rest stops prohibiting staying overnight in your vehicle (which seems silly), but I did that once while driving to Kentucky earlier this year and it was freezing
- Healthish meals that would use minimum cooler space? I am bringing a 28qt one, or is that too small for drinks and some basic food for a 3 day trip?
- Safety tips? I don't own a firearm and don't think that would be a good idea anyway to open carry in my car
- Bathroom? I can use a bush for no.1, but since now most restaurants bathrooms are not open to the public during this time, do I carry a shovel with me? A bucket?
- Staying engaged and alert. Probably won't be pushing more than 8-9 hours of driving a day
I'll continue to read up but would be grateful to hear from those with more experience. I wouldn't do this if it wasn't of the utmost importance with few other alternatives.
