Montreal, Quebec to Atlanta, Georgia and back with a 6-year-old: looking for the best pit stops along the way.

Constraints:

  • A one-hour pit stop is acceptable every 3 hours.
  • 6 hours is a low max for one day of driving
  • 9 hours is a high max for one day of driving
  • Must arrive in Atlanta Georgia the evening of Day 5
  • Must arrive back in Montreal the evening of Day 10

Here is what I've come up with, but am interested in input on how the itinerary could be improved:

Day 1: Drive from Montreal to Bridgeport, CT (my parents) with a pit stop at Lake George for mini golf and lunch. This step can't be improved upon.

Day 2: Drive to outskirts of Washington D.C. with a pit stop in Coatsville, PA to visit cousins. Looking for a cheap place to stay before we hit D.C., even camping/rustic cabin.

Day 3: Visit D.C. and stay at a hotel in the city. Best neighborhood to spend the night in D.C.?

Day 4: Drive to Charlotte. No real interest in visiting Charlotte. Where is a more interesting place within one hour of Charlotte to stay?

Day 5: Arrive in the outskirts of Atlanta? Best place to stay/visit just outside of Atlanta coming from Charlotte?

Day 6: PGA Tour Championship. Stay in downtown Atlanta.

Day 7: Drive to Roanoke with a pit stop in Asheville. Can this be improved upon?

Day 8: Drive to Wilmington, DE to visit family.

Day 9: Hang out in Philly with family.

Day 10: Drive back to Montreal from Philly.
