First-time visitor does a roadtrip from Chicago to Los Angeles. Any recommendations?
Hello,
I'm a 23yo student from Poland and I came with my girlfriend to the US for a cultural exchange. The working part of the exchange ends in two weeks and my visa allows me to stay in the US for another month after my work contract ends. I'm trying to plan an interesting roadtrip and I think it's a good idea to ask the locals and people experienced in traveling about it. I would be really grateful if you told me what do you think about the general idea of things to see and provided me with any tips, interesting places or anything else that could help me plan the journey.
Here is what our interests are:
- We want to see the "American" things just because it's my first time in the US
- Anything related to cars
- I want to experience the "USA junkyard pick and pull"
- Skateparks
- National Parks, sleeping in wild at some nice and safe place
- Places where you can buy unconventional, vintage and cheap stuff like thrift shops and flea markets
- Anything connected to surfing
Some more information about the trip:
- We have our own car which we are planning to sell in the destination city
- Both of us have drivers licenses. I'm capable of driving about 600 miles/day. My girlfriend can do half of that. If we change and sleep in the meantime we can do even more.
- We will have a tent and basic camping supplies and we don't mind sleeping in wild (we even enjoy it if it's safe)
- We need to get from Chicago to Las Vegas in maximum 12 days because we're seeing a friend there
- After Las Vegas we we're gonna have about 2 weeks left. In the 1st week we want to travel California. The 2nd week we want to stay in San Diego and learn Surfing.
- Our budget is tight. It's difficult to say exactly how tight, but we want to do it as cheaply as possible.
Places that we definetely want to go to:
- Chicago - we start there with bunch of friends from work
- Mount Rushmore (it's pretty much in the way from Chicago to Yellowstone so why not)
- Yellowstone National Park - we'd love to be able to sleep somewhere in the wild
- Salt Lake City
- Antelope Canyon, AZ
- Horseshoe Bend, AZ
- Grand Canyon
- Las Vegas - we'd like to stop there for 2-4 nights
- Death Valley
- Joshua Tree Park
- San Francisco and Silicon Valley
- Los Angeles, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Venice Beach
- San Diego- We want to stay there for the last week just to chill and learn some surfing
Here is the route from Chicago to LV that Google Maps suggests me to take. I don't mind going off this route to see something interesting as long as it's not milion miles from it.
