Holiday Weekend Roadtrip - California to Colorado with < 200 Miles of Interstate

Looking forward to a nice roadtrip this long weekend to Colorado with my wife and three dogs. We are loading up our new SUV with all the necessities and are going to try to make it to the Denver area by staying in BLM / Forest Service campgrounds and not paying for a campground or motel along the way.
Knowing this will be a busy roadtrip weekend, we are going to be taking minor highways and stopping at some free campsites we have mapped out. I have a few campsites mapped out in each area in case we find them busier than expected. We are traveling with three dogs - two small and one medium size - so we figured most motels would be out of the question. Now it has become more of a challenge to see if we can find dispersed camping along the entire route.
We usually travel with a 40 foot motorhome pulling a Jeep, so it is going to be nice to be more nimble on this trip. Roadtrippers.com and RoadsideAmerica.com have been helpful finding cool little places to stop along the way. We usually blow right past the little things to see because it is kind of a hassle with the big rig. Excited to see the smaller things along the way this time.
