Help! Need suggestions for route to Durango
Looking for recommendations for a portion of my cross country road trip, specifically the Oceanside CA to Durango CO (first) leg; I am traveling all the way to New England, in a mini cooper, with a dog and am driving solo so have some limitations, but am a lover of all things nature and would love to take advantage of the scenic beauty, if only to drive through (and possibly do a couple short hikes with the pup) . Arizona and Utah both have so much to offer. I've been to Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce, but never to Grand Staircase or Monument Valley. I am reading a mini won't make it through the loop at MV but wondering if sticking to the main highway will still give me a good enough view to warrant the detour. I do have two days to reach Durango; any suggestions? Should I route through Sedona, or up to Kanab for the first night? Looks like Grand Staircase hikes are a minimum of a few hours, and unfortunately I won't have the time, but would love to see what I can from the car. The other option was to do the route 66 nostalgia drive and spend the night halfway (near Kingman). I'm more of a nature lover personally but would love to hear from others who have done this route.
