12 Hour Drive From NH to Raleigh, NC Coming up This Week. Need Suggestions on Departure Time and Strategy.

Total noob to road-tripping, happy to provide clarification.

My wife and I (and our cat) are moving to Raleigh, NC this Wednesday. Google maps puts the trip anywhere between 12-ish hours. We are planning on doing this in one shot (with breaks sprinkled in of course). Initially, we were thinking of leaving at 5AM, hopefully getting us to our hotel by 9 PM at the latest. Theoretically, we would be hitting commuter traffic hours around New Haven, and then evening commuter traffic around VA somewhere. We are now considering doing an evening trip instead, hopefully negating any chance for traffic.

What are some important factors to consider when weighing these options? Which method(s) have you tried and would you do it again?
