Joshua Tree > Chicago: There and back in my Prius
So, I'm going on a road trip, last minute, in my prius...
I've never done a road trip of this proportion, nor have I been to any of the states/cities I'm planning on driving through (ok, I've been to Chicago, but only the city).
tl;dr I'd really appreciate any tips/advice/recs in regards to the route I'm considering, stops I'm thinking of making, stops I haven't considered that I definitely should consider, lodging/where to sleep or car camp, generally anything else that may be helpful.
Tentative routes:
- GOING
- RETURN
Some details about my situation:
- I'm leaving this Monday (7/24)
- I'm trying to get to Chicago by Friday (7/28) but am flexible if I arrive Saturday
- I have the ability (got a small foldable mattress) to car camp (though have never done so)
- I have the budget to stay places every night if need be ($~50/night)
- I will be working most days till early afternoon (2-3pm) and thus won't be able to hit the road till around then
- I'm ok with showing up to some destinations late (midnight or later)
- I have no time real time restriction returning (though am aiming for the weekend after the 4th of July +/- a day or 2)
- For the return, I'd like to stay the course for the most part but am very flexible; mainly want to see CO, Moab, and the Grand Canyon
Looking for help:
- Advice on what things I can't miss (cities, nature/hikes, restaurants, coffee spots, bars, music venues, etc.)
- Advice where to sleep (couch surf, airbnb, motel?, etc.) / car camp (where will I be able to legally do this?)
Think that covers the gist of it. Thanks so much!
