Truckee, CA to Bend, OR question

Hello! Me and my wife are driving through NorCal and Oregon early September but cannot decide which route to take on our way up to Bend from Truckee. We have one night planned between the two. The first route we planned on was to drive through Lassen Volcanic NP and spend the night in Klamath Falls, OR, then Crater Lake NP and up to Bend. The second option is to do Lassen but spend the night in Ashland, OR instead, it seems to be a nicer town but adds some driving distance. The third option is to do US-395 all the way up to Valley Falls but I don't see that many towns on that road, and we'll miss out on both Lassen and Crater Lake. What would you recommend on the given routes?
