Travel advice / precautions for Central America
I'm planning a trip to Central America for 4 months in September and would love some advice from fellow travellers with previous experience in this region.
My plan is to start in Mexico (1 - 2 months) and make my way down to Panama (potentially Colombia too) passing through Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. I've heard that the political situation in Nicaragua has led to safety concerns and travellers have been warned about travelling here. Is this still the case? Are there any other CA countries/places that I should be particularly cautious whilst travelling through? I've read that El Salvador can be quite sketchy, but is it still worth visiting? would love to hear from people that have been.
It's probably worth noting that I'm planning to do a lot of surfing, hiking and exploring off the beaten track. Thanks!
