Someone attempted to steal my belongings from a hostel...
As the title says, the above happened to me. I was in the hostel, but in a common area, and this person was also staying, but left really early in the morning and came back briefly. They then went into our room even though they had all their belongings on them. The hostel is very small, it's just an apartment converted into a hostel. But I was a targeted victim as they had seen me with my belongings out the previous night.
So I randomly went to the room, to put on some pants, and I passed the thief as they were going to leave the hostel. When I got to my locker, the lock came apart and I realised I broke it.
Then it hit me, someone had cut my lock, and I immediately knew it was this person who I just saw in the hall. So I looked for my belongings, and I was missing an electronic device. So I ran to the hall and tried to stop the thief from leaving, and I've never been so scared before.
Luckily there was a hostel employee working, so they managed to get the door locked so the thief couldn't leave, and we found my belongings in their bag.
We called the police, but unfortunately this person really didn't want to be caught and jumped from a 4th floor balcony. He escaped.
I'm happy I have my belongings, but I wanted to post as I have been pretty nervous in the apartment (and I'm volunteering here) and I am afraid. I'm afraid to go to the hostel and if someone comes in the door, I half expect it to be this person. Someone just came into the apartment, and my heart stopped because I was afraid it was the thief.
It makes me feel sick, because they slept in the bed opposite me all night, and I remember seeing them fully clothed with their bag in their bed sleeping and thinking it was strange.
I know my fear is irrational, but has anyone else had a similar experience or just any advice?
