First solo travel advice [MADRID -> NYC]
Hey! 20yo European guy here thinking on going to the US a few weeks this summer for my first solo travel. I was currently thinking on taking a language course in NYC with the only purpose of meeting people and having something to do other than visiting.
The pros of this plan is that they can provide you with accommodation and that would mean meeting people both at the language classes and also at the student house.
The cons is that these courses cost around 500$ a week, and that plus the student housing they can provide would cost me about $2k (for two weeks, only classes and accommodation, without meals and flights).
I've been thinking on skipping this plan and just booking a room at a hostel, this would get my budget down to 620€ for the same length (more than 3 times cheaper). The hostel I've been looking is HI NYC hostel and reviews say they organise events and such.
But I have another alternative, it would consist on taking the language course for only a week without their housing and staying at the hostel for two weeks. This way I could still meet people in class while keeping it cheaper than the first option.
What do you think? Is it a good idea spending that much on classes just to be around people my age or should I just forget the english classes and meet people elsewhere (hostel maybe)? I mean, I am not saying the classes are worthless, only that I don't think they will make that much of a difference on my english level in one week.
Have you ever been in a situation like this where you just wanted to be involved in activities for the only sake of social contact?
Thanks!
