Seward, AK for a few days
I went to Seward, Alaska for a few days. Flight was a bit pricey as it was only booked a couple days in advance, but I rarely ( like this was the first) treat myself to travel vacations...So, I booked at a waterfront place that had access to kayaks and fishing and all kinds of things. But it they weren't really open for the season yet.
There are very few people in Alaska. You can drive a major highway for 20 minutes, in the middle of the day, and not see another car. I live in place surrounded by 6 lane highways. And the mountains are right next to the water. It's shockingly breathe taking.
There was snow on the mountains still. So the animals weren't all awake yet. So, only saw one young-ish moose. One bald eagle sitting on a rock. One might think, that's disappo inting. I was very satisfied with the whole deal.
I've traveled alone for business, probably over 300,000 miles. But I think this was my first "Eff it. I'm going to X-marks the spot" trip. It was awesome. Food there is really, really good. I could imagine the need for really good basic comfort food as a result of living someplace where you come in from the cold quite often. The fish chowder, and fish and chips all over town was so golden crispy. The chowder had more stuff in it than anything. It was like a cup of seafood, and oh- here's some broth. So good. With oyster crackers.
And service everywhere was really nice. Like Twilight Zone level nice. People were just really glad to see a customer before the season hits. I love traveling in the off season. Way less expensive and great service. Lodging was less than half prime season rates. I was sorry to hear they had a violent incident there shortly after I left. As a vet, I'm comfortable with guns. People who aren't as comfortable with hunting culture might not be so happy. Basically, stuffed animals on the walls of every restaurant. Beautiful animals from the bounty of the wild. Great work I enjoyed seeing immensely.
I have a nice picture of the bay as the new banner picture on my music site. I don't mean to offend the rules by posting that link because I want to respect the forum's rules to not self promote. More like warn anyone, etc.
What else does anyone want to know about Seward, AK ? I didn't tour the glaciers, but that's a thing there. Most of the boats weren't open yet aside from the weekends, and I'd already split. There's lots of hikes around there. The stars are amazing. I woke up at 3 AM every night to see the northern lights. Only seeing all those huge stars was a great 2nd prize.
I didn't mind that everything wasn't open yet, because I got to enjoy the town much less crowded. More of traveler, less tourist. It was nice and different kind of time off in an offbeat place.
