How to be more outgoing when no one speaks your language?
I'm planning a trip to Vietnam in August and am starting to put together my itinerary. As I was doing so, I reflected on a brief trip I took to Mexico City last month. It was a great trip but I remember mostly hanging around the hostel at night because I just got a bit too comfortable with travelerss that spoke English and I just kinda got into that groove and mindset and didn't push myself to go out of my comfort zone.
From a personal development standpoint, since I'm already aware of this cop-out type behavior, I know that i'll be more apt to challenge it if it comes up, but from a pragmatic standpoint, it still begs the question: How does one socialize in an area where people don't speak their same language?
I can get a phrase book and learn some basic Vietnamese, but still would love to hear others' suggestions. Thank you.
