First time solo travel: 5 weeks in Western Europe itinerary critique and general questions
Hello all, I'm getting close to my trip and have a rough draft here of where I want to go in order of my travel. I'm trying to remain a little loose here as I don't mind going off the path a bit or maybe stay a day or so more in a place that I love. I've never been outside of the US and I'm incredibly excited. Any critique or advice would be appreciated. I'm going on a $7000 budget and planning to stay in hostels.
I have a few concerns here:
- Can I do this all by train? From the searching through this subreddit it seems as though I might have to do both bus and train.
- From word of mouth I've also heard there's a pass you can buy with a student discount for train travel. Is this a real thing? Am I being lied to about this mythical train pass?
- Can I get by with a jansport backpack?
- How often will I need physical cash on the trip?
- I've heard Switzerland is expensive. I really am not interested in major outdoors hiking adventures; I just want to see the landscape and culture. Can I still get away with 3 days there on a $100-$150/day budget?
