First Solo: Spain->Budapest->Italy Itinerary Help Needed
Hello friends,
First time poster here. I am about to finish college (23M) and am going on my first ever trip across the pond before I work for the rest of my life. I will be making the trip by myself, but staying with an old friend (he lives) in Budapest and possibly meeting up with a couple others along the way (although I fully expect them to bail).
I have bare minimum experience travelling outside of the US.
Zero experience: going solo, staying in hostels/couch surfing, and navigating huge cities transportation systems. I have a friend who has encouraged me to do this, and says it will be amazing, so I have talked my parents into letting me go (neither of them have ever been to Europe nor soloed, but they trust me). I have been doing research, and accept any bits of advice!
I have a 3-4 thousand US$ saved, but plan to work (Uber?) this summer to allow some extra freedom for this trip. My parents said they will be able to pay for me to get to Europe and back, but between Barcelona and Rome all of the costs will be on me.
My goal: To find genuine culture in each city and share it with locals/other travelers.
My interests: Eating the best food (on a budget) via lively markets or holes in the wall. Drinking local beverages, listening to music, fishing the shores of Catania, basically doing things that the locals would do.
My fear: Feeling like a disconnected tourist, missing out on a great experience, and spending too much time in transportation.

To be totally honest, I am torn. In places like Rome and Barcelona there is SO much to see. I am almost willing to sacrifice another museum for a cool experience that would give me a lasting taste of the people/culture. I also know that a lot of the best experiences cost money: agriturismo's in Italy, tours of museums, nice meals, etc. I would love to do a few of these but want to know how to navigate the cities and find the hidden gems.
I have spent a lot of time reading itinerary critiques and I know that I am spending a short amount of time in each city, with the most amount of time in the smallest location, Catania, Sicily. This is because (admittedly via Rick Steve's recommendations and a college professor) I feel like it will be the easiest place to experience the full culture without compromise. That is the purpose of this whole trip. If you have any recommendations for things to do, places to eat, towns to see, anything, please share! I am all ears. Thanks in advance!
