Hey everyone, I've come to pick people's brain.

As the title suggests, I plan on going from Azerbaijan to Kazakhstan by road, rail or boat. I prefer slow travel then flying by plane. Anyone any experience of going across the Caspian Sea, going via Russian by rail or bus?

I've read a few blog posts about crossing by boat but all of them were "well we had a tent, and a car/bike/motorbike and were in a group so...". As a solo woman traveler, it's a good primer but I'm looking for something a little closer to my own situation.

As for going via Russian, were visas a hassle? Safety? I know you can get a transit visas. Should I spend some time in Russia itself to break up the journey?

Please tell me anything you can, I'd love to here it! The good, bad and ugly!
