I found some cheap flights to Almaty (Kazakhstan), and decided I am going to spend 12 days in the Almaty area and in Kyrgyzstan. I will also fly out from Almaty.

I will go at the end of July. I am planning to stay mostly in hostels in the cities, and I will possibly try to join tours for some excursions.

My main question is: How much planning ahead do I need to do? Can I just book transportation/accommodation/tours there, or should I make reservations ahead? I like to research a lot before I travel, but also leave my options open while there.

Any advice would be appreciated, as I haven’t travelled anywhere quite like this before :)
