31 day road trip from New Jersey to California and back
Okay, so basically I want to drive with me and my 2 good friends across the United States and back in 30ish days. Has anyone done anything similar to this and can give me some advice? I just started planning this this week and we plan on going in July.
The plan is:
Central NJ - Chicago, IL - Rapid City, SD - Gardiner, MT - Whitefish, MT - Seattle, WA - Portland, OR - Medford, OR - Reno, NV - San Francisco, CA - Los Angeles, CA - Flagstaff, AZ - Colorado Springs, CO - Denver, CO - Central NJ.
I wrote it all out what we would do every day and where we are staying each night. Some places we will stay longer/shorter than others.
This is what we plan on doing at each of our stops:
Chicago: Millennium Park, Magnificent Mile, Skydeck, and just walking around downtown. 2 nights.
Rapid City: Mount Rushmore, Wind cave park, Badlands Loop Road, and Needles Highway. 2 nights.
Gardiner: Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. 2 nights.
Whitefish: Glacier National Park. 1 night.
Seattle: Space Needle, Museum of Pop Culture, Great Wheel, Puget Sound, Golden Gardens Park, Chihuly Garden and Glass, Pike Place Market, Pioneer Square. 3 nights.
Portland: Japanese Gardens, see our friend, Washington Park, Lan Su Chinese Garden, Council Crest Park, The Freakybuttrue Peculiarium and Museum. 2 nights
Medford: Crater Lake and Redwoods. 1 night.
Reno: Visit friends. 2 nights.
San Francisco: Visit friends, Golden Gate Bridge/Park, Alcatraz, 49 mile scenic drive and drive to Yosemite. 3 nights
LA: Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Hollywood tour, downtown LA. 3 nights
Flagstaff: Antelope Canyon, Grand Canyon, Cathedral Rock. 3 nights
Colorado Springs: Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak. 1 night
Denver: Rocky Mountain National Park. 1 night
Then drive straight back home. Probably will take us 2 or 3 days.
My questions are:
Is this possible with $5,000? Or will that be cutting it close? We are taking a 2014 Latitude Jeep Patriot, 3 people, we will probably eat out more than half of our meals because we suck at cooking.
Am I leaving out anything cool that I would be passing by that would be worth a stop? Is there anything on here that are similar to each other that I should cut out? I only just started planning so it's very likely when I was researching I missed some cool attractions. Or if you live in the area, what are some cool things that aren't in the top attractions online but you think are worth seeing?
Anything you'd like to recommend to me about road trips in general?
This will be my first time travelling in the west, I have only been to a few states on the east coast like Florida and South Carolina and Virginia. My two friends have done a similar road trip as kids that they do not remember much of, and they had an RV. We are all very excited about this.
