Suggestions for 5 week world tour (northern hemisphere)?
I have a bit over 9 weeks vacation to go through this year so I thought I might do a quick (5 week) solo trip around the northern hemisphere. I’ll maybe do South America, Africa, or NZ/AU next year to burn off some of the remaining days.
November, December, or January would be the approximate months for the travel – I’m not keen on hot and humid vacations.
My budget is going to have to be modest to moderate; about $8,000 US (10K CAD) although I don’t mind spending a bit more if I have to. No expensive places, but no shared rooms in a hostel; I’m getting too old for that.
Departure would be from either Toronto or Montreal. I’d prefer direct flights at each jump so I don’t waste too much time or risk losing bags.
I’m mostly interested in art, culture, architecture, and food.
I’d also like wherever I go to be reasonably walk-able. No crazy mega-cities unless they have a historic core and maybe easy to take day trips/tours.
First of all, any thoughts on whether I should travel east to west, or west to east? I'm leaning toward going east to west because it means I can get up a little later each leg of the travel in order to be in sync with the time zone.
I was wondering what places people would suggest?
My current (fairly general) bucket list is Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Jerusalem, Turkey (Istanbul, Troy), Romania, Spain, and Morocco. Any suggestions on particular countries/cities and dates to be there at? E.g. maybe Xmas in Jerusalem – or would that be mayhem and boring because tons of devotees would be doing lots of praying and the shops might be closed?
Finally, before this post gets too long, would a boat trip be an option for a single person? It would be really cool to maybe just hop on a cruise ship and sail a chunk of it. Maybe part of the Asia/Europe route? Sailing through the Suez canal would be cool too.
TLDR: I want to circumnavigate the globe this winter and have 5 weeks. Where should I go, what should I see, and should I travel east/west or west/east?
