Places that are better to go to with groups
Normally I prefer traveling solo and meeting other travelers on the road, but I’ve encountered quite some difficulties here in Sikkim, India trying to arrange tours to the north part of the state which is supposed to be the most beautiful.
On top of Inner Line Permits (no issue getting one), foreign travelers must travel in groups of two or more in order to get approved for Restricted Area Permits (Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim). Now, traveling with two or more isn’t much of an issue, there are enough foreign travelers (barely) to meet this requirement, but the prices per car are ridiculous unless you have 4-5 people, which in this part of India is nearly impossible to arrange (foreigners are not allowed to travel with Indians). Also, if traveling by motorcycle, one must hire a convoy/tour car anyway, so traveling solo or without a tour is nearly impossible/incredibly inconvenient. Luckily Gangtok is a beautiful little city to chill in and there are still a few places that foreigners can go alone and without permits.
So in my experience, Sikkim is a place best traveled by a foreigner in a large group.
Also from what I’ve read, Arunachal Pradesh is probably even more difficult, since there are probably even less tourists to form a group with.
