Packing for New Zealand Work Holiday Trip -Backpack or Suitcase

Hey guys! I need some packing advice for a work holiday in NZ. I'm from Canada and I'm deciding whether to bring a suitcase or a backpack for my check-in baggage. In addition to my check-in, I'll have a carry on and my snowboard gear.

I'll be landing in Queenstown in June and settling there for a couple of months until the summer starts. I don't know what I'll be doing after that. I foresee myself buying a car although it's a decision to be made once I get there.

I definitely plan on touring both islands! I'm planning on staying in the country until my visa expires (one year).

To all of you who have gone on a work holiday trip to New Zealand (or anywhere) how did you pack, how did you find it, and did you wish you packed a backpack (if you brought a suitcase) or a suitcase (if you brought a backpack) instead?
