I depart Valladolid, Mexico on 29 April and need to be in Panajachel on or before 10th May while visiting Uxmal and Palenque. Could I get some feedback/advice please?
My basic plan from here was Mérida -> Palenque -> San Cristóbal de las Casas -> Quetzaltenango -> Panajachel but it’s looking like I won’t have enough time with the long travels from Mérida to Palenque, Palenque to SCDLC and SCDLC to Xela.
This time frame gives me I guess 12 days to see those places but I was thinking SCDLC probably deserves 4-5 days alone.
Is it possible to fit these places in and routes within the time frame at reasonable exploration time without rushing frantically or am I destined to cut a city out?
The three options I have are:
1) Reduce Mérida to arrive in the morning, visit Uxmal, return and check out the city and catch an overnight bus to Palenque then spend a half day exploring Palenque and catch another overnight bus to SCDLC but this means missing out on Izamal and Agua Azul
2) Slip Xela all together. I was planning 2-3 days originally. I don’t know what I am missing out on besides hiking here? Is it worth double backing from Lago de Atitán to Xela then Xela to Antigua? Is it okay to skip it all together? I plan to go from Antigua to Lanquin/Semuc Champey to Flores/Tikal to Belize.
3) Throw the plan of arriving on the 10th out the window. The thing is that I wanted to spend my birthday at Lake Atitlán so I don’t want to do this.
I’m leaning towards cutting Xela out completely. Is this wise? Is it possible to get it all in with sufficient time and allowing for long travels?
